Shaw's Said Spearheading Canned Food Drive

The chain’s pilot program could spread to other New England states.

July 8, 2008

Shaw's Supermarkets, Inc. has reportedly teamed with the New Hampshire Food Bank for a "Cans for Kids" pilot program to fight hunger, according to a published report. Shelf-stable food products collected at Shaw's stores across the state will be donated to area New Hampshire Food Bank agencies and food pantries.

Each New Hampshire Shaw's will earmark such nonperishable items as soups, cereals, and canned fruits and vegetables, for donation. Almost 34 agencies of the New Hampshire Food Bank will receive the donated goods.

If the pilot is successful, the Cans for Kids will continue through the next few months and expand into adjacent states.

Supervalu-owned Shaw's is based in West Bridgewater, Mass. and employs about 30,000 associates in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Vermont.
