Minyard Food Stores Says Layoffs of Over 2,000 Possible

Aug 6, 2008

Minyard Food Stores has informed the Texas Workforce Commission of a layoff that will affect 37 stores and about 2,387 employees after the grocer sells its Carnival Super Market stores and other Minyard-owned stores to Houston-based Grocers Supply Co., Inc.

A spokesman for Grocers Supply said the announcement doesn't take into consideration the number of employees who will most likely be rehired by the new owners after the sale is complete.

Grocers Supply has said that once the stores are acquired, they will be turned over to other North Texas grocery retail operators. The company spokesman added that he believes those operators will most likely want to rehire Minyard employees to handle the stores' business and operations.

Fiesta Mart, which already agreed to take over 11 of Minyard's Carnival locations, is currently reaching out to employees at those stores and asking them to submit applications for employment.

According to Minyard, the job cuts will begin Sept. 29 and end by Nov. 17. Grocers Supply said that by that time, it hopes to be able to identify the other retailers that will be taking over the operations of the remaining 26 stores.
