Technology and the Independent Grocer

March 11, 2008

Trust is increasingly governing the technology deployment decisions that many independent
grocers are making these days, according to the findings of  Progressive Grocer's third annual research study, Technology and the Independent Grocer.

A greater trust in the usefulness and reliability of many of today’s proposed technology-enabled solutions is prompting more operators to launch innovative programs, like marketing to cell phones or tying loyalty programs to biometric payment systems. Trust in bandwidth and Internet security systems, meanwhile, has led to increased deployment of Web-based software and tools.

Conversely, it’s distrust of unverified checks and credit card companies that has led to electronic payment systems’ top billing on the list of important technology applications, eve though the app was just introduced to the study this year. Enhanced check authorization ensures checks are good, while payment terminals that encourage the increased use of PIN debit transactions help avoid costly credit card fees, once again renewing retailers’
trust in plastic. Perhaps most important is the trust that technology companies are placing in the possibilities afforded them by the pioneering spirit of independents, which has in turn led to the myriad solutions being created today specifically for this retail segment. As the
retailers themselves make clear in this survey, we all can trust that there are more exciting technology developments to come.
